Public Space LA!—Raising Awareness and Creating New Solutions

All-Day Conference to Address Los Angeles’ Public Space Issues

Public Space LA!—held by the American Institute of Architects, Los Angeles chapter (AIA/LA)—is a summit on urban open space issues in Los Angeles.  Advocates, architects, scholars, and civic leaders are scheduled to gather at Pacific Design Center, 8687 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, CA, on October 26, 2007, to discuss how greater Los Angeles can create and sustain more improved parks and public spaces, and what the area can learn from other cities.  Co-sponsored by the California State Parks Foundation, the one-day symposium will begin at 8:00 A.M., and is part of Mobius LA, an expo and design conference produced by AIA/LA.

Public Space LA! hopes to create continuity between regional groups to share strategies and gain a new understanding of public space issues in Los Angeles.  A dialog with historian Kevin Starr—author of numerous books on California, including his most recent, Coast of Dreams—will take place at the “power lunch,” sponsored by KFWB News 980 Radio.  The day’s symposia will bring together distinguished panels of top architects and allied professionals to discuss the sustainable future of Los Angeles.  For complete schedule and registration information, visit www.PublicSpaceLA.com.

Confirmed speakers and panelists include Ruth Coleman, director of California State Parks Foundation, Sacramento; William H. Fain, Jr., FAIA, partner of Johnson Fain; Elizabeth Goldstein, president of California State Parks Foundation; Dr. Robert Gottlieb, director of the Urban and Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College; George Hargreaves, senior principal of Hargreaves Associates; John Kaliski, AIA, principal of Urban Studio; Dr. Neal Kaufman, MD, MPH, co-director and professor of pediatrics and public health at UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities; Lewis MacAdams, founder of Friends of the Los Angeles River; Thom Mayne, FAIA, principal of Morphosis; David McNeill, executive director of Baldwin Hills Conservancy; Larry Smith, executive director of North East Trees; Tupper Thomas, president of Prospect Park, Brooklyn; Ed Uhlir, FAIA, director of design, architecture, and landscape at Millennium Park, Chicago; Richard Weinstein, vice chair of architecture and urban design at UCLA; Martha Welborne, FAIA, managing director of the Grand Avenue Committee, and VP/president-elect of AIA/LA; Dr. Jennifer Wolch, professor of geography and director of Center for Sustainable Cities at University of Southern California; Elva Yanez, executive director of Audubon Center at Debs Park; and Marc Porter Zasada, host of “The Urban Man” on KCRW-FM.
Additional sponsors of the event are Grand Avenue Committee, Johnson Fain, and Art Center College of Design.  Full-day admission prices are $280 for general public and $175 for AIA members; additional special price to nonprofit representatives.  For registration information contact AIA/LA at 213.639.0777.  For a detailed schedule, visit www.PublicSpaceLA.com.
