2007 Mobius LA

The American Institute of Architects Announces Mobius LA,
Presented by Kohler; Hosted by Pacific Design Center
Three-Day Expo On Sustainability, Professional Development, and Public Space
October 24-26, 2007, Pacific Design Center

LOS ANGELES—As part of the celebration of October as Architecture Month (to be officially declared by the City of LA this October), the American Institute of Architects, Los Angeles Chapter (AIA/LA), hosts Mobius LA, Presented by Kohler: A Continuum of Architecture, Design, Style, Mobility, and Sustainability—a trade exposition and professional development conference.  Hosted by West Hollywood’s Pacific Design Center, at 8687 Melrose Ave., the expo will be held October 24-26, 2007.
Each day of the three-day expo features a different topic, linked to thematic programs that give AIA members the opportunity to earn all 18 required continuing education units, including health, safety, and welfare.  In addition to the seminars and panels, Mobius LA offers networking events, such as architecturally inspired film screenings, book signings, lectures, and receptions.  Furthermore, the tradeshow floor will provide architecture professionals, students of architecture, and the general public with information on the latest products, services, resources, and technology offered in the architecture and design industry.  While geared toward design professionals, the conference is also expected to attract members of the public with an interest in quality design and the built environment.

To kick off the festivities, Wednesday’s focus is all about sustainable design, and features: “Design Becomes LA,” a keynote panel with the city’s leading architects highlighting the innovation, creativity, and edginess that define contemporary Los Angeles.  Other presentations and discussion topics include the use of alternate materials in architecture, water conservation, LEED standards, urban watersheds, regulatory issues in architecture and land use, and urban design guidelines.
Professional development is the theme for Thursday, which begins with a panel on “Developing Los Angeles,” where 350+ architecture and design firm principals are expected to make up the audience.  The panel is intended to trigger dialogue about smart growth and urban density, and includes real estate developers of major Los Angeles projects.  The highlight of the day will be this year’s AIA/LA Restaurant

Design Awards reception, taking place that evening at the Poliform showroom, 8818 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles.  In addition, an array of panels and presentations on various topics, such as the integrated approach to business practices, hiring a “celebrity” architect, marketing for sustainable results, architectural public relations, business planning for young architects, and design autonomy in a global practice, are offered throughout the day.

The conference concludes with Public Space LA!—a summit on urban open space issues in Los Angeles.  Advocates, architects, scholars, and civic leaders will discuss how the city can create and sustain more and better parks and public spaces, and talk about the successful strategies of other cities.  Friday’s event is co-sponsored by the California State Parks Foundation, and hopes to create continuity between regional groups to gain a collective understanding of public space issues and how to correct them.  During the day’s “power lunch,” hosted by KFWB News 980 Radio, a dialogue with historian Kevin Starr—author of numerous books on California, including his most recent Coast of Dreams—will take place and will later be available for podcasting.  For more information please visit www.publicspacela.com.
